Working in Wasilla

Power in Wasilla comes from Matanuska Electric Association (MEA). They handle new service, meters, and outages here and across most of the Valley.

Wind takes the power out here more than people expect. In the December 2025 windstorm, gusts hit 82 miles an hour at the Palmer airport, and more than 17,000 MEA homes and businesses were out at one point. Some went days without power.

A lot of Wasilla homes are on a private well. When the power goes, so does the water, and the well pump is usually the first thing people want a generator to run. Before we hook one up, we check what the pump pulls when it kicks on, so the generator can actually start it.

There's a lot of new building out here, from houses on fresh lots to shops and garages. Getting power to a new lot means working with MEA on the service and using a meter base they accept, so it pays to start early.

Power out? MEA's Valley outage line is 907-746-7697, or report it in their SmartHub. Their outage map shows whether a crew has been assigned.

New service or a change to an existing one: MEA takes applications online and gives a free preliminary estimate. They also keep a list of meter bases they accept.

Permits

City of Wasilla

Inside city limits, the City's Planning office handles land use permits. Those cover things like putting up a building, adding on, or turning a house into a business. The City asks you to call before you start to see if you need one.

Outside city limits, the rules are different. We'll tell you what applies to your property before work starts.

Wasilla questions

Who do I call when the power's out in Wasilla?

If the neighbors are out too, it's MEA: 907-746-7697, or check their outage map. If it's just your place, call us.

My well pump quits every time the power goes out. Can a generator run it?

Usually, if it's sized right. Pumps pull a lot of power for a second when they start, so we size for that, then wire the generator in through a transfer switch. MEA says you need that switch too, so power can't back-feed onto their lines.

I'm building on a bare lot. Where do I start with power?

Start with MEA early. Their new service application is online and gives a free preliminary estimate for bringing power in. While that's going, we plan the meter base, the service, and the panel so the house is ready when MEA connects it.
