Working in Palmer

Palmer is on Matanuska Electric Association (MEA), same as the rest of the Valley. For outages, new service, or a meter question, MEA is who you call.

Palmer is known for wind. The Matanuska and Knik winds come down the valleys in winter, and they take power lines with them. In December 2025, a gust of 82 miles an hour was recorded at the Palmer airport, schools closed, and thousands of MEA members were out for days. A standby generator, or an inlet and transfer switch for a portable one, keeps the heat and the water on.

Palmer has some of the oldest houses in the Valley. If yours is one of them, it's worth having the panel and wiring looked at before you add a big load like a car charger or a hot tub.

Out toward the Butte and Lazy Mountain, a well, a shop, or a barn means pump circuits, subpanels, and long runs of wire between buildings.

Power out? MEA's Valley outage line is 907-746-7697, or report it in their SmartHub. Their outage map shows whether a crew has been assigned.

New service or a change to an existing one: MEA takes applications online and gives a free preliminary estimate.

Permits and inspections

City of Palmer

Inside city limits, the City's Community Development department issues building permits and inspects the work, at stages along the way and a final before the permit closes. Their office is at 645 E Cope Industrial Way.

The City's homeowner guide says you need a permit to add or change permanent wiring, add an outlet or light, change or move the main panel, or put in solar or wind. Swapping a broken outlet or a bad breaker doesn't need one.

Outside city limits, like the Butte or Lazy Mountain, the City's permits don't apply. We'll tell you what does.

Palmer questions

Do I need a permit for electrical work in Palmer?

Inside city limits, for most new work, yes: new wiring, a new outlet or light, or a panel change all need one from the City. Replacing a broken outlet or a bad breaker doesn't. When a job needs a permit, we pull it and meet the inspector.

Who handles power outages in Palmer?

MEA. Call 907-746-7697 or check their outage map. If the rest of the street has power and you don't, call us.

Where is your Palmer office?

6841 Weswood Drive. The Mat-Su line is 907-357-7776. For an emergency, call 907-561-7776.

Can you get power out to a shop or barn?

Yes. We run a feeder out, usually underground, and set a subpanel in the building. How we run it depends on the distance and what you'll use out there.
