Working in Eagle River
Eagle River is part of the Municipality of Anchorage, but the power comes from a different company. Eagle River, Chugiak, and Birchwood are on Matanuska Electric Association (MEA), the same co-op that serves the Valley. That matters when you need a new service, a meter moved, or an outage reported.
The January 2025 windstorm that knocked out power across Anchorage hit Eagle River too, and some basements here took on up to five feet of water. When the power's out for a day, the furnace or boiler stops, and so does the sump pump, and the well pump if you have one. A generator wired in through a transfer switch keeps the ones that matter running.
Got a shop or a big detached garage? Those usually need a subpanel, 240-volt circuits for a welder or compressor, and real lighting. We run power out to them, usually underground.

MEA warns never to wire a generator into a house without a switch that isolates it from the grid, because power can back-feed through the meter onto their lines.

Eagle River and Chugiak sit outside the Municipality's Building Safety Service Area. The Municipality's land use rules still apply to new buildings and additions, but the building permit and inspection rules aren't the same as in the Anchorage Bowl.
