Working in Girdwood
Girdwood is part of the Municipality of Anchorage and gets its power from Chugach Electric. The town is fed from the Girdwood substation, and the transmission line comes along the Seward Highway.
When something goes wrong at that end, the whole town can go dark. In 2026 a raven damaged equipment at the substation and nearly 1,900 customers were out for most of a day. In January 2025, high winds and an outage shut down the lifts at Alyeska.
If your place sits empty part of the year, think about what happens when the power drops while you're gone. A standby generator with an automatic transfer switch starts on its own and keeps the heat on. With the snow Girdwood gets, heat trace on roofs, gutters, and pipes matters too.
